The 1977 dance drama movie Saturday Night Fever starred John Travolta as Tony Manero, a 19-
year-old Italian-American man who escaped his day-to-day life and limited future prospects by
becoming king of the dance floor at his local discotheque. One aspect of his life that impressed
me was that Tony had never been out of his home borough of Brooklyn. Tony had to face his
fear of the unknown when he went to Manhattan to visit his dance partner. Only when his
curiosity and desire to connect with his potential love interest overcame his fear of stepping
outside his comfort zone did Tony dare to venture out and explore the world beyond Brooklyn.
For many of us, fear keeps us from following our curiosity to explore the unknown. We may
consider the world to be a scary place, especially if we believe that we are walking alone. We
may feel unprepared and too vulnerable to deal with whatever we will discover around the
corner.
If we never venture out into the unknown world, however, we will miss out on the wonder and
beauty that awaits. We may never discover opportunities that were divinely created to match
our unique set of skills and interests. We many never discover who we truly are – and who we
are not!
If we never explore the world beneath the visible surface, we will never experience the calm
peace beneath the turbulent ocean waves. It is deep within our being that we discover our
soul, our essence that is unchangeable. Here we encounter the field of infinite possibilities and
the Power and Presence of the Divine – everywhere. Just as the tip of an iceberg above the
water surface is typically only one-tenth of the whole iceberg, our conscious awareness of our
physical existence is only a fraction of our true Self within that awaits our perception. Curiosity
and the possibility of discovering something greater than we have ever known lead us forward
as we dive deep beneath the surface and realize that we are, and have always been, part of the
One Infinite Life that is God.
Love and light,
