For some people Christmas is a season to join the crowds shopping for gifts; decorating our houses and businesses with trees covered with sparkling lights and ornaments; baking, cooking and/or eating lots of delicious cookies and festive holiday meals, and especially spending time with family and friends. We can also go beneath the hustle and bustle of the season to the “reason for the season”: celebrating the birth of the baby Jesus.
Many faiths celebrate light festivals around the Winter Solstice such as lighting the Menorah during Hanukkah in the Jewish tradition, celebrating Buddha’s enlightenment during Rohatsu from the Buddhist faith, and lighting the kinara’s seven candles during Kwanzaa celebrations. Just as the Winter Solstice signifies the sun’s simultaneous death and rebirth, all of these light festivals symbolize leaving the past behind and awakening to the hope and promise of new light and being reborn ourselves.
In Science of Mind we celebrate the Mystic Christ. Our founder, Ernest Holmes wrote,
“We must understand the Christ is not a person, but a Principle, [a state of being.] It was impossible for Jesus not to have become the Christ, as the human gave way to the Divine, as the man gave way to God, as the flesh gave way to Spirit, as the will of division gave way to the will of unity—Jesus the man became a living embodiment of the Christ.
As the human gives way to the Divine, in all people, they become the Christ.” (The Science of Mind, p. 359)
On December 23, 2021 at 6 pm, our Center will celebrate the Rediscovery of Christmas with a metaphysical interpretation of the Christmas story with the birth of the child, shepherds, wise men, angels, the star and goodwill as the light is reborn in Jesus and in our own hearts. Divine Love, Peace and Joy will reign as we listen to the inspiring words, sing Christmas carols, and light our own Christmas candle. It is our time to recognize the Divine Presence and Power of God within Jesus, within our own lives and throughout the world!
