Have you ever been to a Christmas Candle Lighting service or midnight mass and noticed that
people come together with their families, sometimes bringing with them people who might
never come to a spiritual center at any other time of the year? What is it about this Christmas
ritual that opens our hearts to the Divine Presence?
As we assemble as the Beloved Community, there is a sense that something miraculous is
unfolding. In this safe and sacred space of spiritual community, as we celebrate the birth of the
Christ Child, we are also celebrating the birth of our own conscious awareness of the Power and
Presence of the Divine at the center of our own being. We sense that we are part of something
greater than ourselves. Our soul feels the love and comfort of belonging to the Beloved
Community. Our hearts are filled with peace and joy as we sing “Silent Night” and light our
individual candles from the Unity Candle.
The candle we light on Christmas Eve celebrates the birth of the Christ Child as Jesus and as the
Christ Consciousness awakened within each one of us. From the simplicity of being born in a
manger, Jesus demonstrated that regardless of our own beginnings, we are an incarnation of
the Divine Spirit that seeks to express Itself in, through and as us as Infinite Love and Peace. As
we light our candle, we recognize that it is the light of God within that lights our way and
illuminates our conscious awareness of who we truly are: sons and daughters of the Most High.
We lift our individual lights together as One to celebrate the ultimate gifts of Love, Peace, Joy –
and Life Itself!
Love and light,
Rev. Pam
