Provable scientific laws govern our universe. For example, Isaac Newton watched an apple fall (legend has it that it fell on his head!) and formulated the law of gravity. He expanded his theory and proved, through experimentation, that the tangible law of gravity also keeps people firmly on the ground. Spiritual laws and principles seem less tangible, but they are just as true.
Ernest Holmes was a practical person who wanted people to put the Science of Mind and spiritual principles to use, not just think about them as intangible concepts. In the Science of Mind textbook chapter called “How to Use It,” Holmes wrote:
“It is easy enough to rush about shouting that there are no sick people, but this will never heal those who appear to be sick. It is easy to proclaim that there are no needy. Anyone can say this, whether he be wise or otherwise. If we are to prove such statements to be facts in our experience, we shall be compelled to do more than announce a principle, no matter how true it may be. (Ernest Holmes, The Science of Mind, pp. 51-52.)
In the Centers for Spiritual Living, we put into practice the spiritual principles that govern our lives. Reading this inspirational message or listening to a Sunday talk can be uplifting, but that feeling is short lived if we don’t apply and practice the spiritual principles in our relationships, our work, our finances and throughout our lives. It’s easy to say, “Change your thinking, change your life,” but if we don’t actually change what we think about, or our beliefs and expectations, and our behaviors, we will continue to stay locked in our old habits and experience the same old thing.
By asking questions with curiosity, as we discussed last week, and by looking with wonder at our everyday lives, we open our minds and hearts to greater possibilities. We open ourselves to understand the spiritual principles that govern our lives, including that we, and all people, are part of the One Life that is God. With practice, we can prove these principles and experience the life of Love, Joy and Peace that is the Divine Intention for our lives. Enough talking. Let’s prove it!
Love and light,
